National Saturday fully formed in January of 2007...i remember it was raining at the time...
National Saturday are a 5-piece alternative band based in North Cork. The band was formed when Brian and Colin
got together and wrote songs after the split of Brian’s previous band ‘Mimic’. After some time the two decided that
some of the songs that were coming out would sound better if performed by a full band. A drummer and bass
player were needed. Paddy had a great reputation as a drummer in Mallow and after a chance meeting at the train
station was asked to join a band that currently had no name, just an idea. The band practised together as a 3-piece
for several months without a much needed bass player. There were many bassists tried but none were suitable
(Brian even considered playing bass) until Adrian came along. He was exactly what the group had been waiting
for. Between this time and the recording of their first demo, piano and keyboards had been introduced to the
songs. The band realised that a keyboard player would be needed for the future. Sarah, who was introduced to the
band by Paddy, was the only keyboard player tried out for National Saturday. After five minutes everyone knew
that she was right for the band. She added a new dimension to the music and a new sound. National Saturday has
been a 5-piece since.
National Saturday’s music is hard to pin down or categorize. Their musical style is extremely diverse as slow
songs are mixed with brighter more uplifting rhythms. Each song tells a story, whether fact or fiction. The bands
lyrics are a feature of the group that make them stand out; different meanings can be derived from each person’s
outlook. Their lyrics are abstract, personal and often unexplained; “Hit downstairs with the heavens screaming” or
the hopeful “The day I learn to fly, I’m never coming down”.
A review of a National Saturday gig:
"It's a rare breed of band that inspires such intense levels of dedication to its devotees, but Mallows newest and
most upbeat musical force National Saturday are certainly among the few. Brian Magner has the crowd eating out
of his palm from the moment he takes the stage. This charisma makes his band impossible to dismiss. They can
be soft and introspective but they certainly know how to up the pace with songs like 'Airport Lights'."
